DISAPPOINTMENT IN CHALLENGE SHIELD
The Lochgelly Band confirmed their position as one of Scotlands top 1st section bands by again qualifying for the Scottish Challenge Shield contest. The contest was held in the impressive surroundings of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 26th November. Unfortunately only four bands accepted their invitations to the contest and so a much reduced field took the stage in Glasgow early on the Sunday morning. The competition however was no less intense as pre-contest favourites Clackmannan District locked horns with newly promoted City of Discovery, former Championship section Johnstone Silver and of course Lochgelly.
The band chose to reprise Philip Sparkes "Endeavour" which they had played a few weeks earlier at the Fife Championships. On that occassion the band had played well to finish in fifth place overall. On stage at the Royal Concert Hall we seemed to play the piece better; even Eb Bass player John Martin managed to get those bits that had eluded him in Falkirk. Unfortunately adjudicator Nigel Boddice appeared to feel that the piece was beyond the band and awarded us fourth place out of the four bands. Not to be downhearted at least the band were there flying the flag for Lochgelly.
